PreIB applicant

Instructions for spring 2021

Pre-IB is for those who were born in 2004-2006 and who have studied nine years in August 2021. You can apply to pre-IB, if you are studying 9th grade and will get a school leaving certificate (=peruskoulun päättötodistus) or a corresponding certificate by August 2020.

We offer all four levels of Mathematics, Philosophy and Visual arts in addition to the customary languages and sciences. Total 90 IB students at three year levels form a friendly little school within the big one. The average total points have usually been 34-35 and the average Diploma grade closer to 6 than 5 (scale 1-7), nine times in 2010-2020. Our graduates study at universities both home and overseas.

How to apply

Every applicant must go through the Finnish national secondary level application procedure, send a latest school report and an appraisal form to us, and attend our entrance exam.

The national application procedure

Every applicant to Pre-IB should go through the Finnish national secondary level application procedure (=toisen asteen yhteishaku) at www.opintopolku.fi BETWEEN 23.2.–23.3. 2021. Under "äidinkieli", please mark your native language that you speak at home (or one of them). If you apply from abroad, please choose "ulkomailla suoritettu koulutus". The admission code of Tikkurilan lukio IB is 0268 809. Make sure to give an email address that works and that you check on daily basis.

School report and appraisal form

Your school should send the copy of your latest school report AND our own IB appraisal form to Tikkurilan lukio, Valkoisenlähteentie 53, 01370 Vantaa by March 23, 2021 at 15.00. The applicant should first download the form him/her/oneself and fill out the personal part. The school fills out the rest of the form and mails it. Make sure to give an email address that works and that you check on daily basis. Your appraisal form can you max one extra admission point.

Entrance exam

Tikkurilan lukio IB tests the applicants residing in Finland. The entrance exam will take place on April 22 at 3-5pm (please register by 2:30pm). No separate invitation will be sent. If two entrance exams partly overlap, please contact both schools. Please note that the former entrance exams are not shown to the applicants.

Tikkurilan lukio IB World School will arrange an entrance exam on April 22 at 15-17. The exam tests applicant’s skills in English language and in Mathematics. The exam can earn the applicant four points.

The school leaving certificate can earn the applicant max 10 points. The entrance exam points and max one additional point (for the appraisal form) will be added to the applicant’s grade point average so that the total points are max 15. 30 applicants will be admitted to the pre-DP on the basis of the total points.

Those applying from abroad can be admitted on the basis of the school reports and the appraisal form. Every application is considered individually.

Language requirements

IB Diploma always requires two languages: a native language and a foreign one, or two native languages. We offer English and Finnish at both levels. If you don’t have any command of Finnish, our school is probably not the right one for you. However, you can still apply in case your native language is one of the languages listed below and you have sufficient skills to study your native language independently for final exams. You should always, however, contact the IB DP Coordinator (maarit.berg(at)vantaa.fi) to discuss the entrance exam if you have studied Finnish less than two years.
