Instruction in a student’s own native language aims to support the student’s own thinking, their language skills, and communication. Native-language teaching creates the foundation for functional bilingualism and strengthens the student’s multicultural identity. This instruction also supports the learning of other subjects.
In Vantaa, we offer instruction in about 30 different native languages or secondary languages. Native-language language teaching is supplemental instruction in addition to the student’s basic number of lessons, and we aim to provide this instruction for two lessons a week.
